The National Institute of Statistics (NIS) of the Ministry of Planning have officially launched the Cambodia Agriculture Survey (CAS) 2020 anonymised microdata and geographical mapping report on the NIS website.
The CAS 2020 is a nationally representative survey of approximately 15,000 agricultural holdings. The survey is implemented by NIS together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) supported by the 50x2030 Initiative through the technical assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The information for the survey was collected between December 2020 and January 2021 on the state of the agriculture sector. Specifically, the data was collected on crop cultivation, livestock and poultry raising, aquaculture and capture fishing. The survey also included information on Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) and COVID-19’s impact on agriculture.
The thematic maps will prove useful to planners, policy makers and researchers within Cambodia and overseas. Mapping the agriculture-related indicators at the provincial level is expected to inform readers about the corresponding trends and dynamics within the country, and to help orientate new development policies and programs. A secondary objective was to illustrate and map Cambodia’s socioeconomic dynamics within the agricultural sector when relevant and as per the available data. The impetus for producing these maps came from the wishes of the NIS and MAFF to ensure the production of useful and convenient information resources from the survey.
The dissemination of microdata is made necessary by a high demand from the research community for freely available data with which to conduct further analysis. The dissemination of such anonymised data allows for government, students, private sector and researchers in Cambodia and beyond to conduct their own analysis. The transparent dissemination of data is an important step towards filling the agricultural data gap in Cambodia.
